Rangiora Reach Masterplan

Client: Environment Canterbury Regional Council

Position Held: Landscape Architect

  • The Ashley River / Rakahuri is a dynamic landscape where biodiversity, flood control, recreation and cultural values are distinctly interwoven. Thrive were engaged to facilitate consultation and develop the Masterplan for the Rangiora Reach area of the Rakahuri.

  • Challenges included balancing these values within the constraints of ongoing flood protection and ensuring stakeholder and community values were expressed in the final Masterplan.

  • The design focused on long-term phased solutions to widen the flow path of the river via gradual retreat of existing forestry, ongoing pest control and improved habitat for endemic butterflies and birdlife in suitable locations throughout the site. Signage including trail wayfinding alongside cultural and historical interpretation panels will be incorporated throughout the site over the coming years.
