Rangiora Reach Masterplan

Client: Environment Canterbury Regional Council

Position Held: Landscape Architect​

  • The Ashley River / Rakahuri is a dynamic landscape where biodiversity, flood control, recreation and cultural values are distinctly interwoven. Thrive were engaged to facilitate consultation and develop the Masterplan for the Rangiora Reach area of the Rakahuri.

  • Challenges included balancing these values within the constraints of ongoing flood protection and ensuring stakeholder and community values were expressed in the final Masterplan.

  • The design focused on long-term phased solutions to widen the flow path of the river via gradual retreat of existing forestry, ongoing pest control and improved habitat for endemic butterflies and birdlife in suitable locations throughout the site. Signage including trail wayfinding alongside cultural and historical interpretation panels will be incorporated throughout the site over the coming years.

  • Hardy groundcover and conical evergreen suppress weeds and reduce the need for irrigation in the long term

Wilson Park Masterplan

  • Masterplan for well-used and loved local park to upgrade facilities and environment while retaining open spaces and views

  • Challenges included the retention of the large open green space for events, upgrading the toilet facilities, improvement of the mainentrance, inclusion of cultural recognition, mitigation of on-site impacts of stormwater and connecting power for events

  • Solutions involved a community orchard, seating solutions, drainage features and bridges, cultural interpretation panels, upgrade of the toilets and retention of open green space with sparsely placed specimen trees.

  • Client feedback: The Waihi Beach  community is happy the final Concept Plan took into account their feedback and they feel listened to.
